Objective Case
Dear Dr C L TAN,
We would like to consult you on the following:
1(a) My mummy loves me.
(b) My mummy loves my sister.
(c) My mummy loves my sister and me.
2(a) Thank you for inviting my sister to your party.
(b) Thank you for inviting me to your party.
(c) Thank you for inviting my sister and I to your party.
When sentences 1(a) and 1(b) are joined to form 1(c), the word‘me’could be retained.
When sentences 2(a) and 2(b) are joined to form 2(c), the word‘me’is changed to‘I”.
Could 2(c) be‘Thank you for inviting my sister and me to your party’?
Sia Hui
Dear Sia Hui,
You are right; sentence (c) is “Thank you for inviting my sister and me to your party.” Reason: Both“my sister”and“me”are in the objective case. The pronoun“I”is used as the subject in a sentence.
Compare:
(1) He and I can go together.
(2) Let him and me go together. “He” and “I” are subjects, while “him” and “me” are objects.
