关于 "across" 等
陈清霖老师:
我想请教几个小问题。
1. Shut和open都是开的意思,有什么区别?
2. It is running across the grass。意思是“它正在草地上跑”为什么要加across呢?只要running就可以了吗?
王霁雯上
霁雯:
你的第一个问题中的“Shut”和“Open”,一个是“关”,另一个是“开”,不是同义词。
“It is running across the field”的意思是“它正在草地上跑”。更准确的说法是“它正从草地这边跑到另一边去”。
这句必须用介词“across”或“in”引导副词性短语,不然就错了。
陈清霖复
Dear Sir,
I would like to ask you the following questions:
1.”I am yet to receive his reply.”Does it mean that I have not received his reply?
2.”Please be informed that...”and “Please find enclosed a booklet containing...”are common beginning words in our local official letters Are they good and proper expressions?
3. “Picking up his suitcase, off he walked towards the direction of the nearby wood.”
How do you explain the position of the word” off”?
4.“He don't like to eat meat.”and“He doesn't like to eat meat”. which one is correct? Do they mean “do not” and “does not”in short?
5.”His plans are a receipe for disaster.”Is it correct to remain using“a receipe for”?
Wen Xin
Wen Xin,
Sentence (1) does mean”You have not received the reply.”
Both sentences in (2) are OK, but the word order of the second sentence is better adjusted as follows:”Enclosed, please find a booklet containing”or “Enclosed is a booklet for your information.”
“off”in sentence (3) is used as an adverb particle, as in “... he walked off...”Since there is the preposition “towards”after“walked”,“off”can be deleted, to be concise, the phrase“the direction of“may be crossed out, too.
Yes, “don't”is the contracted form of “do not”and “doesn't”=”does not”. Obviously,“He don't like to eat meat” is grammatically wrong.
In(5), the word “recipe”is misspelt. The sentence means “His plans are possible to cause great damage.”(他的计划可能祸害无穷。)
